The First Letter Home in Spring
Xinan Yang
2026
A visual narrative of digital dislocation, memory and cultural belonging.
In this exhibition, the artist shares a visual letter that traverses time, distance and longing. Through a series of paintings and graphite drawings, this exhibition explores how the meaning of ‘home’ is reshaped in an age defined by digital existence, transnational movement and fragmented memory.
Structured in four chapters, the exhibition unfolds like unstamped pages of a letter. Each part traces a different feeling: from the dislocation of digital identity to the appropriation of other people’s memories, to the
quiet intimacy of everyday objects and finally to a reflection on cultural belonging through a lens of magical realism.
These works do not depict the physical structure of home. Instead, they attempt to capture the atmosphere, the remnants and the emotions it leaves behind. They are contemplative letters that were never sent, addressed to distant family and to the artist herself. Through migration
and becoming, these letters grow increasingly unfamiliar.
‘Spring’ in the title speaks both to the season and to the idea of renewal and return. This return is gentle, unfinished and full of pauses rather than a straight path.
The exhibition lingers in liminal spaces, between
departure and arrival, memory and invention, presence and absence. A letter still traveling, drifting and suspended, an intimate message searching for its home.
